Senior Safety Officer – Grade KMC 6 (1 Post)

Job Specification

Reporting to the Plant Engineer, Kenya Meat Commission, the Senior Safety Officer will be responsible for:

1. Updating the safety board on site.
2. Ensuring all staff and visitors adhere to set safety procedures.
3. Coordinating safety teams within the Commission based on established safety requirements.
4. Conducting effective investigations into all incidents/accidents in the Commission.
5. Identifying and coordinating relevant statutory health and safety trainings for KMC staff.
6. Inspecting and testing machinery and equipment to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
7. Preparing and continuously reviewing emergency response and evacuation plans.
8. Enforcing the use of relevant personal protective equipment by employees and contractors.
9. Providing technical advice to workplace safety and health committees.
10. Identifying specifications and ensuring procurement of personal protective equipment, service providers, first aid items, and safety equipment.
11. Ensuring all employees, visitors, and contractors adhere to occupational safety and health regulations as well as KMC’s safety rules.
12. Coordinating regular workplace inspections to identify hazards and risks and recommending corrective actions.
13. Ensuring the preparation of reports on safety performance.
14. Maintaining contacts with the Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health Services (DOSHS) and ensuring all workplaces are registered.
15. Promoting awareness of health and safety.

Person Specifications

For appointment to this grade, an officer must have:

1. Served in the grade of Safety Officer or in a comparable and relevant position for a minimum period of four (4) years.
2. Bachelor’s degree in any of the following disciplines: Engineering, Physics, Biochemistry, Computer Science, or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
3. Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health from a recognized institution.
4. Proficiency in computer application skills.
5. Fulfilled the requirements of Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution.
6. Shown merit and ability as reflected in work performance and results.
