The Climate Smart Agriculture Lead Consultant – Africa will provide strategy and technical leadership in delivering the environmental aspects of Heifer’s Africa-based Signature Program and project portfolio, focusing on promoting Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) and regenerative agriculture approaches for smallholder farmers. This role involves mentoring Africa regional program and business development staff, ensuring CSA technical excellence, and exceeding regional revenue targets. The consultant will collaborate with the global CSA Lead, aligning strategy and sharing learnings across regions. Responsibilities include growing the project portfolio, ensuring compliance with environmental standards, and mitigating adverse impacts.

Responsibilities & Deliverables:

  1. New Business Development (25%):
    • Identify and pursue climate-smart future business opportunities.
    • Strengthen strategic client relationships with donors and organizations.
  2. Consultant Management (20%):
    • Guide, empower, and supervise consultants to pursue Heifer’s mission effectively.
  3. Embedding CSA in Signature Program Implementation (50%):
    • Work with Africa regional and country teams to ensure environmental aspects of Signature Program project portfolio meet objectives.
    • Lead or support CSA delivery in Heifer Africa region’s projects.
    • Ensure compliance with environmental and social safeguards standards.
    • Oversee monitoring and evaluation of environment-related workstreams.
    • Lead the development of CSA knowledge products, reports, and articles.
    • Provide CSA technical guidance and support the mainstreaming of CSA technologies.
  4. Business Development Resource Mobilization (5%):
    • Support resource mobilization efforts by contributing to proposal writing.
    • Strengthen external partnerships and linkages with institutions supporting CSA integration.
    • Manage a team of consultants for technical strategy development and proposal writing.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, international development, agriculture, environment, or related field.
  • At least 15 years of related programmatic experience.
  • Significant CSA technical experience in designing/implementing projects for smallholder farmers.
  • Minimum of 5 years in a supervisory capacity.
  • Strong networks with high-priority donors, foundations, private sector, and research partners.
  • Successful experience in bringing together private and public funding for large-scale programs.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in agriculture, business, environment, or related field.
  • Experience living or working extensively in the Africa region.
  • Management of institutional donor projects.

  • Ability to spot opportunities and close deals in business and proposal bids within the environment sector.
  • Knowledge and experience in complex partnerships with multiple partners and donors.
